Wilson Cruz and Marga Gomez highlight OSU awareness week

Wilson Cruz, star of the television series My So-Called Life, and Marga Gomez, a stand-up comedian, are the two major speakers scheduled for the 1996 Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Awareness Week at Ohio State University. The week runs January 20-27 and includes programs on being an ally, homophobia in female sports, and the status of the bisexual community.

Cruz is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ricki Vasquez, one of the main characters in My So-Called Life. His character was the first gay teenager on a regular series. Cruz is a gay youth advocate and spokesperson for the Los Angeles Gay Community Center's teen program, where he works regularly with homeless gay, lesbian, and bisexual teenagers. He will speak about growing up Catholic and Latino, and about being a gay youth in the age of AIDS.

Marga Gomez describes her show "Half Cuban Half Lesbian" as "an evening of special interest stand-up comedy and victim art, with absolutely no O.J. references."

"Uninformed, but highly opinionated," Marga will speak about some of her favorite subjects: "Self-pity, doom, and sex with Newt Gingrich's mom." An original member of the Latino comedy ensemble Culture Clash, Gomez has been featured on HBO's Comic Relief VI and Comedy Central's Out There.

For times and locations for these and other events of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Awareness Week, call the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Services at Ohio State University at 614-292-6200.

Get ready to dance

Dancin' in the Streets is the single largest fundraiser for the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland each year. This annual street fair is an opportunity for Clevelanders and visitors to enjoy the outdoors in the summer. Once upon a time, it was a small event, attended by mostly gay men from Cleveland. It is now a very large party with retail and information booths, live entertainment, and of course, dancin' in the street, attended by men, women, children, gays, bisexuals, transgender people, and many non-gay people. In recent years, Dancin' has drawn many people from outside the Cleveland area, including Columbus, Cincinnati, New York, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and Chicago.

It is now time to start planning for Dancin' in the Streets 1996. The committee will have its first organizational meeting on Wednesday, January 31 at 6:00 pm, at the AIDS Taskforce's new offices, 2728 Euclid Avenue, on the 4th floor. Everyone interested in planning the 1996 event should attend this meeting. If you cannot attend the event, but would like to be involved in the planning, call Jan Cline, volunteer director, at 216621-0766, ext. 224, so you can be included.

Call up and be counted

Overlooked Opinions, a Chicago firm that specializes in the gay and lesbian market, is working with gay and lesbian publications around the country (including the Chronicle), to conduct an extensive national study of the gay and lesbian population.

“Gay Census '96" is a two phase project that will be the broadest evaluation ever of

the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the United States and Canada.

The first phase consists of an anonymous ten minute telephone survey employing the toll-free number 800-GAY-VOICE (800429-8642). The survey consists of questions covering a wide variety of topics including basic demographics, political beliefs, discrimination, general opinions, consumer behavior and an optional section for people who are HIV-positive or have AIDS.

"The data promises to be fascinating. It will help the lesbian and gay community to better understand itself, and it will help the political, educational and commercial sectors develop relationships with our community,” said Jeffrey J. Vitale, Overlooked Opinions' chief executive officer.

The project will also help publications like the Chronicle become more aware of their readership and the makeup of the communities they serve.

To partake in the survey, call 800-GAYVOICE, and listen for instructions. The TTY number for hearing impaired or non-hearing callers is 800-555-0900.

Hothead needs a hand

For those of us familiar with the comixzine Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist by Diane DiMassa, it's hard to imagine a world without Hothead and Chicken. But Hothead Paisan needs your help. Rising production costs and the financial hardship of their major distributor has forced Giant Ass Publishing to turn to the community for support.

Through Hothead Paisan, DiMassa expresses anger about the difficulty of living in the world as a queer, as a woman, and as any

minority. What began with DiMassa drawing in her journal to dispel excess rage has become a global network of people who bond over a struggle for survival.

"Given the powers that be of today who try so hard to close the door on voices outside the mainstream, it is imperative that we connect with each other rather than sadly watch ourselves disappear," DiMassa said. "The greatest gift of producing the Hothead Paisan series has been the feeling of community we've received from our readers. There is nothing else in the world like Hothead Paisan and we appeal to you to help keep this voice alive."

Donations can be sent in any amount to Giant Ass Publishing, PO Box 214, New ♡ Haven, CT 06502.
